Military: How to Register Under DANTES

Each year, nearly 50,000 military service members as well as eligible spouses and civil service employees take CLEP exams to reach their education goals. Because the exams are funded through the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), you could have your exam fee waived if you are eligible.

NEW! We’re excited to announce MyCAA eligible military spouses can now take CLEP exams for free thanks to funding from MyCAA through contracts with DANTES and College Board.

Follow these steps to learn how to register for a CLEP exam under DANTES.

Select your CLEP exam to begin registration.

  1. Review your DANTES eligibility.

Before you register for a CLEP exam, review your DANTES eligibility to find out if you're eligible to receive benefits.

  2. Choose an exam.

Select the CLEP exam you want to take and go to the page about that exam to see a description of what it covers, how much it costs, and study resources.

  3. Add the exam to your cart.

From the exam page, add the exam you want to take to your shopping cart. If you're eligible for DANTES funding, and you haven't already taken this exam for free, the cost will be waived when you check out.

  4. Log in to your account or sign up for an account.

When you click View Cart and Check Out, you will be asked to sign into your account or create a new account.

  5. Specify your military status.

When purchasing an exam in My Account, you will be asked if you are eligible for DANTES funding in the Edit Personal Details section of the process. You must correctly designate yourself as DANTES-funded and answer questions about your military status in order to receive DANTES funding. MyCAA eligible military spouses will need their MyCAA ID and FA #

  6. Select a preferred test center.

You have the option of testing at a physical test center OR at a location of your choice via remote proctoring. Fully funded test centers don't charge administration fees to military test takers. Use the Test Center Search tool and check the fully funded test center box. All centers that appear in your search will have a fully funded tag in the test center type column.

Like fully funded test centers, the $30 remote proctoring fee for the first attempt at a CLEP exam is covered by DANTES. To take a CLEP exam with remote proctoring, you’ll first need to make sure you meet all technical and environment requirements, including a strong internet connection, a PC laptop or desktop computer, and a private room to test alone.

  7. Enroll in CLEP Search.

CLEP Search makes it easier for colleges with military support services to send information to military-affiliated students. During your CLEP exam registration, select Yes to the student search opt-in question to receive materials from those colleges and organizations.

  8. Review your order and check out.

Note that after you identify as DANTES eligible in your account, the study guide for the exam you are purchasing will be automatically added to your account at no charge to you.

  9. Schedule your exam.

If you're testing at a physical test center, contact them to schedule the date and time of your exam.

If you're taking an exam with remote proctoring, visit the CLEP-Proctortrack website to set up a Proctortrack account and schedule your remote proctoring appointment.
