Military: How to Register Under DANTES
Each year, many military service members as well as eligible spouses and civil service employees take CLEP exams to reach their education goals. Because the exams are funded through the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), you could have your exam fee waived if you are eligible.
We’re excited to share that MyCAA eligible military spouses can now take CLEP exams for free thanks to funding from MyCAA through contracts with DANTES and College Board.
Follow these steps to learn how to register for a CLEP exam under DANTES.
Instructions
-
Review Your DANTES Eligibility
Before you register for a CLEP exam, review your DANTES eligibility to find out if you're eligible to receive benefits.
-
Choose an Exam
Visit the CLEP exam topics page and choose the exam you want to take. Go to the page for that exam to see what the exam covers, what it costs, and resources to help you prepare for it. (If you’re familiar with several exam topics and having trouble deciding, no worries, multiple exams can be purchased during the same transaction.)
Click the Register button, once you’ve decided on an exam
-
Sign in to My CLEP
To continue the registration process, you’ll be asked to sign in to My CLEP student portal using your College Board account. If you don’t have one, you should sign up for a new account.
Please note: College Board has updated all student accounts, including My CLEP student portal. If you didn’t sign in to your account and verify your email before March 23, 2023, and you haven’t already done so, you’ll have to create a new account to access your saved information (your personal profile, test scores, etc.).

If eligible for DANTES military funding, complete the requested information about your military status. MyCAA eligible military spouses will need their MyCAA ID and FA #
Optional Demographics questions are available.
-
Make Your Exam Selection
- You must first agree to the Terms and Conditions.
- Answer the "About Your Registration" question. Answer “Yes” and enter your voucher code if paying with a voucher and “No” if paying with a credit card or are DANTES eligible.
- Select the exam. You’re only able to select one exam subject at a time, but you’ll be given the opportunity to register for another exam prior to check out.
-
Select a Preferred Test Location
You have the option of testing at a physical test center OR at a location of your choice via remote proctoring. DANTES funded test centers don't charge administration fees to military test takers. Use the Test Center Search tool and select the DANTES funding eligible only option in search results. All centers that appear in your search will have a DANTES funded tag in the test center type column.
Like DANTES funded test centers, the $30 remote proctoring fee for the first attempt at a CLEP exam is covered by DANTES. To take a CLEP exam with remote proctoring, you’ll first need to make sure you meet all technical and environment requirements, including a strong internet connection, a PC laptop or desktop computer, and a private room to test alone.
-
Practice Before Your Exam
You're given the option to purchase an examination guide; however, after you identify as DANTES eligible in your account, the study guide for the exam you're purchasing will be automatically added to your account at no charge to you.
-
Send Your Score
Scores are automatically sent to the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) for all DANTES eligible exams, so there's no need to select CCAF as a score send option.
- When registering and prior to testing, you may select up to 2 additional institutions to have your score sent for free.
- If you don't want to select other score recipients click, “I want to wait to send my scores later,” to proceed. (Your scores will automatically be sent to CCAF for eligible DANTES funded exams.)
- After you’ve taken your exam, you must pay a fee to send your transcript (score) to any institution. Please note: Self-funded score transcripts must be ordered from the My CLEP student portal. Ordering transcripts for DANTES funded exams must be completed using the Parchment Transcript Ordering Service and paying the required $30 fee.
-
Check Out
Review and confirm your order prior to submitting your registration.
- If you're a DANTES-funded test taker, you'll see the price has been adjusted to $0.00.
-
Schedule Your Exam
If you're testing at a physical test center, contact them to schedule the date and time of your exam.
If you're taking an exam with remote proctoring, visit the CLEP-Proctortrack website to set up a Proctortrack account and schedule your remote proctoring appointment.
FAQ
Can I reschedule from a test center to an exam with remote proctoring?
Yes. If you'd like to change your testing location from a physical CLEP test center to remote proctoring, test takers can log in to the My CLEP student portal to change the test location. After clicking on the “Upcoming Exams” tab, the test taker must select the appropriate exam and then select “View and Edit Registration.” When on the “Registration Details” page, click Edit under the “Exam Details” section and then follow the steps to change the test location.
- It’s important to note that when updating an exam location, the original registration is canceled, and a new registration ID is created.
- In the Order Summary section, you’ll see refund details for the original registration and payment details for the updated registration which will display the required $30 remote proctoring fee. (Please be aware that refunds may take 7-10 business days to be posted back to the credit card.)
If a voucher or DANTES funding was used for the original registration, it will be applied to the updated registration. However, the student may have to cover e-guide costs and remote proctoring costs if the original voucher doesn't cover these fees. In addition, DANTES funding can only be applied to an updated exam subject that wasn’t previously funded by DANTES. Otherwise, the student is responsible for covering the cost for the updated exam.
After placing your order, you'll receive an email from CLEP confirming that your registration has been updated. You’ll then have to go to the Proctortrack website to create an account and schedule your exam appointment.
Please Note: Be sure to check the "Who's Eligible for Remote Proctoring" requirements found on the Registering for a CLEP Exam with Remote Proctoring page prior to rescheduling your exam.
Can I reschedule my test with remote proctoring to a physical test center?
Yes. If you'd like to change your testing location from remote proctoring to a physical CLEP test center, test takers can log in to the My CLEP student portal to change the test location. After clicking on the “Upcoming Exams” tab, the test taker must select the appropriate exam and then select “View and Edit Registration.” When on the “Registration Details” page, click Edit under the “Exam Details” section and follow the steps to change the test location.
Please be aware that when updating your exam location, the original registration is canceled, and a new registration ID is created. If a test taker self-paid for an exam, a refund will be issued for the original registration, and payment will be required for the updated registration.
If a voucher or DANTES funding was used for the original registration, it will be applied to the updated registration.
Note:
- The remote proctoring fee is refundable within seven days of purchase, except for redeemed exams and redeemed remote proctoring sessions.
- Refunds may take 7-10 business days to be posted back to the credit card.
- Remote proctoring refund requests submitted after seven days won’t be refunded.
Can I retake an exam?
Yes. However, you may not retake an exam of the same title within three months of the initial testing date. If you retake the exam within the three-month period, your administration will be considered invalid, your score will be canceled, and any test fees will be forfeited.
If you're retaking an exam of the same title and have questions regarding the date of the initial administration, immediately notify the test administrator and contact CLEP Services.
