CLEP College Board Higher Education Centralized Score Reporting Portal FAQ

What is changing with CLEP score delivery?

College Board is moving toward a centralized higher education score portal that will eventually house scores for all College Board programs, including CLEP.

When does the transition take place?

Starting in early 2027, your institution can begin accessing CLEP® scores through the new centralized College Board Higher Education Score Reporting Portal. To give your team time to adjust, your current score delivery method will continue through existing channels until the end of 2027.

What is the current method for receiving CLEP scores?

At this time, institutions receive CLEP scores through:

  • Paper score reports mailed to institutions, or
  • Electronic Score Reporting (ESR).

These methods will continue for all institutions through the end of 2027.

How will my institution access scores in the new portal?

The new portal offers two ways to retrieve scores:

  • Download scores directly from the portal as nonencrypted, fixed-width (TXT) or comma-delimited (CSV) files—no technical setup required. Individual student reports can also be downloaded in PDF format.
  • Set up automated downloads through a web API. Files are available in TXT or CSV formats as well and will no longer require decryption.

How does this compare to how institutions access SAT or AP scores?

The same College Board professional account will be used to access SAT, AP, and CLEP scores once CLEP scores move to the portal in early 2027.

Do institutions need to take any action now?

Here are important next steps:

  1. Identify the staff at your institution who need access to CLEP score reports.
  2. Have them create a College Board professional account if they don’t already have one. If they’ve already created a College Board professional account for any purpose (e.g., accessing SAT/AP scores, registering for BigFuture, or using Search tools), have them use that same account.

Tip: If your institution plans to implement the web API, don’t turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) on the account. If your account is already set up with MFA, no worries—future communications will follow with guidance to turn off MFA.

  1. Have them add [email protected] to their contacts so important notifications reach them.
  2. Share the file layout specifications and sample files for the TXT and CSV formats with your technology team to support web API automated retrieval. The layouts are the same whether you choose to retrieve files directly from the portal or implement the web API. We suggest reviewing these layouts ahead of early 2027 to help your team transition because there are some differences from the files you receive through current channels.

Will my institution receive a new CLEP code when my institution’s CLEP scores are moved to the College Board Higher Education Score Reporting Portal?

Due to system requirements, some institutions will receive a new CLEP Designated Institution (DI) code. This code determines where CLEP scores and official transcripts are sent for credit evaluation and recordkeeping.

  • Institutions impacted by this change will be contacted directly so they can begin preparing for the transition.

Please note: If impacted institutions also administer CLEP exams, the 4-digit Test Center code won't change.

Is there a CLEP pilot?

Yes. Starting in mid-October 2026, a small group of pre-identified institutions will test CLEP score delivery through the College Board Higher Education Score Reporting Portal, ahead of the broader rollout to all institutions in early 2027.

Is my institution part of the pilot?

Only a limited number of institutions will participate. The pre-identified institutions have already been contacted directly. At this time, there is no open enrollment or waitlist for the pilot.

What happens if my institution isn't part of the pilot?

Nothing changes for your institution during the pilot. Starting in early 2027, your institution can begin accessing CLEP scores through the new portal, but your current delivery method will continue through existing channels until the end of 2027, giving your team time to adjust.

Will pilot institutions still receive scores through their current delivery method during the pilot?

Yes. Pilot institutions will continue receiving CLEP scores through their existing delivery channels through the end of 2027.

When will institutions receive more information?

Watch for updates in the coming months and full implementation details in early 2027.

Will this affect how students send CLEP scores?

No. There is no impact to students or student score sends at this time.

Who should institutions contact with questions?

Institutions may contact [email protected] or reach out through standard College Board support channels.
