In light of the growing developments with the pandemic, the CLEP program is focused on ensuring the safety of our students, education professionals, and staff.

Below is information for test takers, testing staff, and other education professionals in the event that they are impacted by COVID-19.

Please continue to check back regularly for updates.

CLEP Exams with Remote Proctoring

Students now have the option to take CLEP exams with remote proctoring. Remote proctoring allows students to take an exam online while a human proctor monitors them via video. If you’ve encountered issues with finding a CLEP test center and/or scheduling your exam, remote proctoring may be a good option.

Remote-proctored exams will be administered by Proctortrack, CLEP’s remote proctoring partner that specializes in verifying the identity of online test-takers while detecting and deterring academic misconduct.

To be eligible for remote proctoring, you must be:

  • 13 years old or older and located in the U.S.

  • DANTES-funded. *
*Please note: DANTES-funded candidates can register now for remote-proctored exams but won’t be able to schedule their remote proctoring appointment until mid-June. If you’re a DANTES-funded test taker who needs to take an exam before mid-June, we recommend scheduling your exam with a CLEP test center.

You must also have a PC computer or laptop (no Macs), an internal/external speaker and microphone, a camera, and, if taking notes during the exam, a white board with a dry erase marker or one transparent sheet protector with a dry erase marker. You must also test alone in a private room.
For more information, visit the CLEP Exams with Remote Proctoring page.

CLEP Test Takers Whose Registration Tickets Expired

Test takers whose registration tickets expired on or after March 1, 2020 due to the impact of COVID-19 are elgible to receive a CLEP exam voucher until April 30, 2021. The voucher would allow them to take an exam any time between now and June 30th, 2021. After April 30, 2021, these vouchers will no longer be issued.

If you purchased a registration ticket that has expired, please contact CLEP Services by emailing [email protected] with "Exam Voucher – Coronavirus" in the subject line or by calling 800-257-9558. When contacting CLEP, please include your name, address, telephone number, and CLEP exam subject.

Please note that these vouchers are for students who purchased their registration tickets. If you registered for your CLEP exam using a voucher code from your school or another entity, please contact the person who provided the original voucher.

Test Center Status Update

As the pandemic continues to impact institutions across the country, the status of CLEP test centers may have changed.
If you're planning to take a CLEP exam, we strongly advise you to contact the test center immediately to confirm that they're currently administering CLEP exams. If not, find out if you can make arrangements to test at that center at a later date or find another test center by using the CLEP Test Center Search tool. If you’re eligible, you may also be able to take a CLEP exam with remote proctoring

Reminder: CLEP registration tickets are valid for 6 months and can be used at any CLEP test center. If you already have a registration ticket and would like to switch from testing at a CLEP test center to testing with remote proctoring, follow the steps below.

  1. Log in to CLEP My Account to change your preferred test center.
  2. Go to the My Account Overview page and click on the appropriate exam under Active Exam Registrations. Scroll down to the Preferred Test Center section and click on Edit this information. Select the Via remote proctoring option and hit Save
  3. You’ll then be taken to the Checkout & Registration page which will display the $30 remote proctoring fee.
  4. After placing your order, you’ll receive an email from CLEP confirming that your registration has been updated.
  5. Go to the Proctortrack website to create an account and schedule your exam appointment.

NOTE: The designation “Open” in the Test Center Search results indicates that a test center administers CLEP exams to all test-takers.  It is not an indication that the center is open or closed for business.

Guidance for CLEP Test Center (Updated June 2020)

The CLEP Program will not be suspending CLEP testing and are leaving closure decisions to individual test centers. However, as states begin to reopen, we encourage all centers to follow the guidance of the CDC and their state and local governments.

The link below provides updated information for CLEP test centers about reopening after the easing of Covid-19 restrictions. The document includes general information resources, recommendations from CLEP, and answers to common questions.

CLEP Honors Awards

Due to the number of CLEP test center closures as a result of COVID-19, the CLEP Program has decided to suspend the CLEP Honors Awards for the 2020-21 academic year. We hope to resume CLEP Honors for the 2021-22 academic year and will provide more information once plans are finalized.

CLEP Vouchers Ordered for the 2020-21 School Year

For high schools and districts that have either purchased vouchers to cover the costs of CLEP exams and/or are planning to administer exams during the remaining months of the 2020-21 school year, we wanted to provide some information should your schools need to close.

If your school has recently closed or will be closed during the time CLEP exams would have been administered, your students still have the option to use their registration ticket and test at another CLEP test center or test via remote proctoring before June 30th, 2021. To find a nearby test center, please use the CLEP Test Center Search tool.

Students who registered for a CLEP exam using a school voucher code but are unable to test by June 30th, 2021 will have their registration tickets automatically canceled, and schools won't be invoiced.

Students who would like to test after June 30, 2021 will need to re-register for a CLEP exam using a school's voucher code. The school will need to reorder and distribute new vouchers for the 2021-22 school year. Schools can place voucher orders for the 2021-22 school year starting June 1, 2021. The new vouchers are valid from July 1st, 2021 through June 30th, 2022.
