CLEP Remote Proctoring Requirements

Ready to take your CLEP exam with remote proctoring?

Make sure your computer and testing room meet these requirements before you register for a CLEP exam with remote proctoring. If they don't, you won't be able to test.

Equipment

Computer

  • Must be a PC desktop or laptop computer. No Macs, tablets, Chromebooks, or mobile devices permitted.
    • Use Windows operating system version 10 or version 11.
  • Must use Chrome browser, version 80.0 or higher.
  • Multiple monitors or dual screens aren't permitted.
    • Additional monitors must be removed from the test area.
  • Download and install the ETS Online Test application on the computer you'll use for the test. (You can find the download file link in the Resources section below.) To install the application, navigate to your Downloads folder. Locate the installer (UnifyRPInstaller_PROD.exe), right click on the file, and select Run as Administrator.
  • Make sure the computer you'll be using for your exam also meets Proctortrack technical requirements.

Note: Administrative privileges are required on the test delivery computer to download and install the applications. Computer firewalls and security applications can interfere with the test delivery software. If you experience this issue, you may need to disable or reconfigure your applications prior to the test.

Keyboard & Mouse

  • Must use only one keyboard and mouse during testing.
  • Wireless keyboard or wireless mouse aren't allowed.

Speakers

  • Must use an internal or external speaker.
  • Headset or wireless earphones aren't allowed.

Microphone

  • An internal or external microphone is required.

Camera

  • Can use the computer's built-in camera or a separate webcam.
  • Camera must be able to be moved to show the proctor a 360-degree view of the room, including your tabletop surface, before the test.

NOTE: If your camera can't be moved to provide a 360-degree view of the room, you'll need a handheld "mirror" available to complete your room scan.

Environment and Testing Space

Privacy

  • You must be alone in a private room with no one else entering the room for the duration of the test.
  • You can't take the test in a public space such as a park, internet café, or restaurant.
  • The room shouldn't have any maps, periodic tables, posters, charts, and any other materials related to the subject matter of the examination.
  • You'll be required to complete a room scan prior to the start of your exam on test day.

Tabletop and Seating

  • Your computer and keyboard must be on a desk or other tabletop surface for the duration of the exam.
  • The tabletop and surrounding area must be clear of all items not approved for use during the test.
  • You must sit in a standard chair; you can't sit or lie on a bed, couch, or overstuffed chair.
  • Food and drink aren't allowed during the test unless approved as an accommodation.

Permitted Items:

The only items permitted in your testing space are your testing device, approved testing accommodations, testing materials provided by the testing center, and note-taking materials as specified within the CLEP Remote Proctoring Requirements page for remote test takers.

Prohibited Items Examples include (but not limited to):

  • Any unauthorized testing aids
  • Any electronic devices other than testing device:
    • Audio players, recorders, tablets, notebooks
    • Bluetooth, wireless, wired, or battery-operated devices—i.e., any other personal computing devices, including TVs (which must be removed from the room or covered)
    • Devices capable of recording—i.e., audio, photographic, or video content, or capable of viewing or playing back content
    • Listening devices of any type, unless provided by test center for language tests—i.e., wireless or wired headphones/earbuds media players with headphones
    • Flash/thumb drives or any other portable electronic storage device
    • Mobile phones, smartwatches, fitness trackers, watches with alarms, separate timers of any type, and other communication devices (simple non-digital watches are acceptable)
    • Calculators (a calculator function is built into the software for some exams; for more info, visit clep.collegeboard.org/test-day/calculators)
    • Nonmedical electronic devices
  • Any type of pens, highlighters, mechanical or colored pencils
  • Dictionaries, books, pamphlets, or reference materials
  • Food, beverages, or tobacco products
  • Hats (unless worn as a religious requirement)
  • Hooded clothing such as sweatshirts or sweaters
  • Papers of any kind (scratch paper will be provided by the test center administrator)
  • Slide rules, protractors, compasses, or rulers
  • Backpacks, fanny packs, briefcases, bags, purses, wallets, outdoor wear, and any other personal items
  • Any weapons, firearms, or other items prohibited by law or test center/campus safety and security policies

In addition, any screen-sharing or remote-access software (such as Zoom, Skype™, TeamViewer™ and Microsoft Teams™) MUST BE DISABLED prior to the test and must remain disabled throughout the test. Make sure that the software will not open automatically during the test.

Note-Taking Materials

  • You may not take notes on regular paper, for security purposes.
  • You may only take notes using one of the following:
    • White board with dry erase marker
    • One transparent sheet protector and dry erase marker
  • If you don't secure one of these approved note-taking surfaces prior to the exam, you'll not be able to take notes during the exam, or you'll have to reschedule the exam.
  • You'll be asked to erase all notes in view of the proctor at the end of the test.
  • Test takers using a white board must do so by facing and being in full view of the camera. Turning around to use a white board or leaving the camera’s view is not allowed.

If your computer and testing area meet all of these criteria, you can register for a CLEP exam with remote proctoring.
