How to Open a Test Center

Follow the steps below to establish a test center on your campus. If you have questions or concerns at any point during the process, please contact us at 800-257-9558, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET, or clep@info.collegeboard.org.

Step 1: Request a Username and Password to the CLEP Resource Center

As part of the application process, you'll need to access password-protected forms and documents in the CLEP Resource Center. To request a username and password, send an e-mail to clep@collegeboard.org; include "CLEP Resource Center password" in the subject line. Once you have received your log-in information, you can access the forms and documents through the links below.

Step 2: Complete an Online Application

Before filling out an application, you must first identify a Master Site Administrator (MSA) for your testing location. The MSA actively manages the overall testing program and procedures, although not necessarily acting as an on-site supervisor or administering the exams. The MSA should have a bachelor's degree and experience administering standardized tests.

After identifying the MSA, complete the test center application.

Step 3: Complete the Required Documentation

If your application meets all of the requirements, your site will be assigned a four-digit test center code, which will be mailed to you with instructions for completing the following additional documentation. Please keep a paper copy of all documents for your records. You will need the shared secret code that you provide on the Digital Certificate to request installation passwords and to install the CLEP software.

Return the documents listed below by mail and fax, as indicated.

  • Print, fill out and mail the ETS Technology-Based Testing Center Agreement and the CLEP Addendum documents, with the appropriate signatures.

    Mail both documents to:
    Educational Testing Service
    Computer-Based Testing Production Services
    Rosedale and Carter Roads
    Mail Stop: 46-Z
    Princeton, NJ 08541
    Attention: Test Center Management

Additionally, please send a copy of both documents to:
Educational Testing Service
Corporate Supplier Management
Rosedale and Carter Roads
Mail Stop: 76-D
Princeton, NJ 08541-0001
Attention: T-BT Contract Manager

  • Fill out and fax the Digital Certificate Request Form. This form allows us to issue a digital certificate for your test center that will ensure a secure environment for you to download and deliver tests using the Internet. Please fax the completed form to CLEP Services at 609-406-5600.

Step 4: Install the CLEP Software

Once CLEP receives the documents described above, the CLEP software, remittance and return envelopes, and a copy of the Test Administrator Handbook will be mailed to you. The handbook contains installation instructions and outlines CLEP policies and procedures.

You will also receive a complimentary copy of the latest CLEP Official Study Guide, CLEP brochures, and a sampling of free promotional materials in a separate mailing.

Step 5: Train Your Test Center Staff

The Test Administrator Handbook and the online CLEP Test Administrator Training Course are two of the most important items in your toolbox. These two resources explain how to use the CLEP software, register candidates, submit exam payments, implement correct CLEP policies and procedures, reach volume goals and ensure that the test center is following all security requirements.

Note: CLEP does not allow students enrolled in undergraduate programs to proctor tests or to be involved with the CLEP software in any way.

Step 6: Promote and Open Your Test Center

Let your students know about CLEP by featuring your testing schedule and credit-granting policy on your college's website, in the college catalog, and in other printed resources. You can also order free promotional materials such as posters, brochures and advising kits. Learn more about promoting your test center.

Once you have completed all six steps, your test center will be ready to administer your first CLEP exam.
