In light of the growing developments with the coronavirus (COVID-19), the CLEP program is focused on ensuring the safety of our students, education professionals, and staff.

Given the recent closures of many high schools, colleges, and universities, we’d like to provide test takers, testing staff, and other education professionals the following information in the event that they are impacted by COVID-19.

Please continue to check back regularly for updates.

CLEP Test Takers Whose Registration Tickets Expired

Test takers whose registration tickets expired on or after March 1 due to the impact of COVID-19 are elgible to receive a CLEP exam voucher that would allow them to take an exam any time between now and June 30th, 2021.

If you purchased a registration ticket that has expired, please contact CLEP Services by emailing [email protected] with "Exam Voucher – Coronavirus" in the subject line or by calling 800-257-9558. When contacting CLEP, please include your name, address, telephone number, and CLEP exam subject.

Please note that these vouchers are for students who purchased their registration tickets. If you registered for your CLEP exam using a voucher code from your school or another entity, please contact the person who provided the original voucher.

Test Center Status Update

As many states have reopened or will be reopening soon, the status of CLEP test centers may have changed.

If you're planning to take a CLEP exam, we strongly advise you to contact the test center immediately to confirm that they're currently administering CLEP exams. If not, find out if you can make arrangements to test at that center at a later date or find another test center by using the CLEP Test Center Search tool. Reminder: CLEP registration tickets are valid for 6 months and can be used at any CLEP test center.

NOTE: The designation “Open” in the Test Center Search results indicates that a test center administers CLEP exams to all test-takers.  It is not an indication that the center is open or closed for business.

Remote Testing

Unfortunately, CLEP does not have the ability to change its delivery model in the immediate future or offer remote proctoring this spring.  We'll communicate with all test centers if anything changes but expect to continue to make CLEP available under its current model for the foreseeable future.

Guidance for CLEP Test Center Staff

The CLEP Program will not be suspending CLEP testing and are leaving closure decisions to individual test centers. However, we encourage all centers to follow the guidance of the CDC and their state and local governments when deciding about closures and closure durations.

The link below provides further information for CLEP test centers about the current coronavirus outbreak. The document includes general information resources, recommendations from CLEP, and answers to common questions.

CLEP Honors Awards

Due to the number of CLEP test center closures as a result of COVID-19, the CLEP Program has decided to suspend the CLEP Honors Awards for the 2019-20 academic year and cancel the CLEP reception at the 2020 NCTA Annual Conference. We hope to resume CLEP Honors for the 2020-21 academic year and will provide more information once plans are finalized.

High Schools Offering CLEP

For high schools and districts that have either purchased vouchers to cover the costs of CLEP exams and/or are planning to administer exams in the remaining months of the 2019–20 school year, we wanted to provide some information should your schools need to close.

If your school has recently closed or will be closed during the time CLEP exams would have been administered, your students still have the option to use their registration ticket and test at another CLEP test center before June 30th, 2020. To find a nearby test center, please use the CLEP Test Center Search tool.

Students who registered for a CLEP exam using a school voucher code but are unable to test by June 30th, 2020 will have their registration tickets automatically canceled, and schools will not be invoiced.

Students who would like to test after June 30, 2020 will need to re-register for a CLEP exam using a school's voucher code. The school will need to reorder and distribute new vouchers for the 2020-21 school year. Schools can place voucher orders for the 2020-21 school year starting June 1, 2020. The new vouchers are valid from July 1st, 2020 through June 30th, 2021.
