Achieve Your Education Goals with CLEP

With the College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP), you can earn college credit for what you already know by taking any of the 33 introductory-level college subject exams. Prepare for and take the exams on your own time, whether you’re returning to college or working to finish your degree.

CLEP Benefits

  • Save time. Taking one CLEP exam in place of just one 3-credit course could save you more than 100 hours of class time and related coursework.
  • Save money. A student who earns 15 CLEP credits to apply toward a degree could save nearly $5,000 at the average public 4-year institution.
  • Accelerate and graduate. Taking CLEP exams early helps students complete introductory requirements and move on to their majors quicker so they can graduate on time.

How to Earn CLEP Credit

  1. Check your college’s CLEP credit policy to see which exams it accepts.
  2. Create a CLEP account and register for your test.
  3. Contact a CLEP test center to schedule your exam.
  4. Study using the recommended resources on the CLEP website.
  5. Take your exam and send your score.

What Students Are Saying About CLEP

Jennifer Hunt

Morgantown, Ind.
Over 20 years after leaving college, getting married, and having 10 children (she now has 11), Jennifer wanted to finish her degree but didn’t want to spend 3 years in a classroom. “The main reason I chose to do CLEP was that I could go as fast as I wanted and earn my degree without having to spend a bunch of time away from my family.” She received 40 credits through CLEP exams, which helped her earn a bachelor's in business administration in 14 weeks.

Matthew Frame

Ramsey, Minn.
Matt Frame's parents didn't want him to graduate from college with mounds of debt, so they encouraged him to start earning credit with CLEP while still in high school. Matt ended up taking 17 CLEP exams, earning 66 credits, and spending just $6,000 to earn his bachelor’s degree, which he was able to pay for with a part-time retail job. “[CLEP] allowed me to define my own college experience and really take on opportunities that wouldn’t have been available to me.”

Rebecca Johnson

West Palm Beach, Fla.
Rebecca saw the advantages of taking free CLEP exams funded by the military. After taking three CLEP exams and earning 12 credits, Rebecca is now only 1–2 semesters away from graduating. "The time you save (with CLEP) is invaluable.”
