Get Started With CLEP
The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) offers you the opportunity to receive college credit for what you already know. Earn qualifying scores on any of the 33 introductory-level college subject examinations and accelerate your education. The 90-minute exams, which cost $80 each, are administered at 1,700 test centers, and 2,900 colleges and universities.
Four Main Steps to Taking the CLEP Exam:
Step 1
Find out your college's CLEP policy.
To find out if your college accepts CLEP, use the CLEP College Search tool. Each college sets its own policy: It decides which CLEP exams it will grant credit for and how many credits it will award. So talk to your admissions officer, academic advisor or test center administrator to learn more about your institution’s CLEP Policy.

Decide which exam(s) to take.
Read the exam descriptions of all 33 exams to find the right one for you. Then, get more details and try sample exam questions.
For military service members: Effective December 11, 2010, DANTES will not fund retesting on a previously funded CLEP exam. However, service members may personally fund a retest after waiting six months. Read more about CLEP for Military.
Step 3
Find a test center and register.
CLEP exams are administered throughout the year at over 1,700 colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. Once you find a conveniently located test center, contact them directly about registration and scheduling.
